Qdesign is an Italian robotic system integrator active since 2003 in CNC robotics with head offices in Pisa. The extensive background gained through all these years of experience in robotic milling – from wood and polystyrene to marble and granite – together with the internal R&D structure has contributed to successfully develop a robotic grinding application, designed to process any type of casting: from small to large, simple or complex made of iron, aluminium or steel. The innovation of the system is the use both of an adaptive algorithm (PATENTED) which allows the system to automatically adapt to the casting deformations, and the application of a compliant force actuator to grind the smaller flashes and burs. The systems running since 2013 have achieved important goals:
Efficient operation on low batch production;
Low cost and low accuracy fixtures to hold the casting;
timesaving of more than 50% compared to manual grinding;
Increased quality and finishing accuracy
The other key factor is the quick, easy and off-line programming of the pieces: dedicated foundry macros and tool have been inserted in the CAM software that is now a unique environment with the CAD software, making it simple for the user to modify the piece at CAD level without switching program. Being the programming off-line, the system is always in operation on grinding the casting, and production is never stopped.
Our product range is basically tailor made on the needs of the client: the cell configuration takes into account the maximum dimension & weight of the casting in order to deliver a flexible system in that range. Flexibility is given by the software that allows the operator to program any shape, and the R&D department is constantly optimizing new dedicated features in order to quicken the programming time of new castings, that is anyway in the range of some hours.
